Kayla's Story

Kayla
Age 13
Beaumont Children's Hospital
Bone Cancer

Kayla doesn’t want to miss out on anything life has to offer. She actually came into this world early, just to attend her own baby shower!

At the age of 9, Kayla was diagnosed with Ewings sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that affects 250 American children each year. She underwent painful chemotherapy, but strengthened others through her example. Her mother recounts, “There were days I had a hard time holding it together but she was always there with a kind word or a smile that made everything better.”

Even with 80 absences in the fifth grade, Kayla was determined to keep up with her class by doing homework during treatments. She couldn’t wait to go back to school with her friends.

Those who know Kayla say she has a big heart. She loves volunteering at fundraisers for her school and hospital because she wants to help others get the most out of life too.
